Metro Self Storage, South Brunswick, N.J. Named 2020 Facility Of The Year Construction Winner

Metro Self Storage’s South Brunswick facility received the renowned award for the exceptional design of the facility and its ability to overcome a series of challenges developing the project.

The 21-acre parcel consisted of a ravine that bisected the property and protected wetlands mandating a natural barrier from the development site. The project also required a zoning variance and designing a stormwater runoff basin before construction of the new storage facility could begin.

“We decided early on that this was the right location to design and build our 7th New Jersey storage facility,” says Bob Heilman, vice president of development for Metro Storage LLC. “The site brought some unique challenges, but we knew our experienced teams would be able to work successfully with all of the stakeholders through each phase of development.”

A large cache of concrete Jersey traffic barriers from the 1950s buried on the site was crushed and ground for use as structural fill. Effective coordination between Metro’s construction superintendent and subcontractors mitigated delays and kept the project on schedule.
